Sima Morgello and Orientales Capture the $10,000 Mini Prix, Sponsored by Horseflight

GLADSTONE, N.J. – Aug. 19, 2018 –Monmouth at the Team presented an exciting $10,000 Mini-Prix, sponsored by Horseflight, at Hamilton Farm, headquarters of the USET Foundation, on Sunday. The event brought the entire community together. Riders, owners, friends and family gathered in the hospitality pavilion for music, food and an afternoon of great show jumping.

Out of 28 entries, 12 progressed to the jump off of Skip Bailey’s technical course. First to go in the jump-off was amateur rider Sima Morgello and Orientales, owned by Double S Farms. The pair successfully attempted a tough inside turn after the first fence and left all the rails in their cups. They would be the only horse-and-rider combination to go double clear. Penny Brennan (Loxahatchee, Florida) and her own Vertigo Delorme, the second-place finisher, attempted the turn, jumped clean but incurred time faults. Douglas King and Zeno, owned by Royal Crown Stables LLC, clinched third and Devin Ryan and his own Florida were fourth.

“I actually planned to go around from the first fence to the second fence in the jump off, and I heard Devin Ryan say, ‘I’m going to go inside,’” Morgello said. “I decided to change my plan last minute. What was probably most challenging was my nerves, I know my horse is always there for me. I got through that part (of the course) and the rest felt pretty smooth.”

Originally from New York and an NYU graduate, Morgello now is based out of Long Valley, New Jersey in the summer and Florida in the winter, with her trainer and significant other, FEI World Cup Finals silver medalist Devin Ryan.

Ryan found Orientales (Chantilly), a 16-year-old Selle Francais mare, for Sima five or six years ago. Recently, Morgello and Chantilly have had top-10 results at Lake Placid, Upperville, Devon, Longines Masters and more.

“She’s been truly a fantastic horse for me.” Morgello said. “She took me from a very low level to starting to compete at a higher level. She’s been very patient with me.”

Recently, Morgello just started work to fill in on projects for Lizzy Chesson, USEF managing director of show jumping, who works out of the USET Foundation office.

Morgello thanks her mother who, she says, works hard to help her. And she thanks Ryan. “He’s the most encouraging person I know,” she said.

Second-place finisher Brennan was the winner of Thursday’s $5,000 Welcome Stake, sponsored by Equine Billing Services, aboard Darena MB, owned by Sarah Dockery. Her Mini Prix partner, Vertigo Delorme is a 9-year-old Westphalian stallion by Chacco Blue, co-owned by Brennan and Laurent Dupre.

Brennan was impressed by the course design throughout the show.

“Kudos to the course designer (Bailey),” she said. “He really did a great job, not only made the riders ride well and the horses jump squarely, he also created great sport for the spectators.”

Redfield Farm Sweeps the $2,500 Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, sponsored by the Lindner Family

Earlier in the day, the $2,500 Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, sponsored by the Lindner Family, took place. Lauren Henry and Zena D, owned by Emerald Isle at Hamilton Farm, headquarters of the USET Foundation.

Henry hails from North Kingston, Rhode Island and started riding with Redfield Farm during the Lake Placid Horse Show. She’s only been riding Zena D for about a week.

“She knows exactly what she’s doing,” Henry said. “It’s funny, she knows when it’s jump-off time. She lands from the jump and turns. She knows where we’re going. She’s really cool.”

Henry and her Redfield Farm barn-mates took the top-six prizes in the Classic and Henry earned the championship of the division.
